Limestone Tile for the Home

If you are a homeowner, you want nothing but the best when it comes to decorating your home. To give the interior of your house an exemplary look, the best thing that can set the theme and mood for your house is the flooring. When it comes to flooring, homeowners can choose from granite tiles, marble tiles, and ceramic tiles, but there is something in limestone tile that sets it apart from the other types of tiles making it a highly popular choice for home flooring.

Limestone has its own unique and natural qualities that make it stand out among the other types of tile flooring and one of them is its natural shine which gives a space a luxurious look. Since limestone is found in bodies of water, a few impurities like dead creatures and shells get deposited in it which gives limestone its variety of shades and textures. Some of the colors that are available for limestone include earthy tones of green and brown, blue, and grey.

Limestone also gained its popularity because of its durability, so it can be used in any room in the house since it can stand up to heavy traffic. Homeowners use it in the kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom without worrying about damage as it has a very hard surface and can even resist extreme temperatures.

It is also the most hygienic flooring since it doesn’t allow the growth of bacteria and mold which is bad for your health.

Limestone tiles are indeed the perfect choice for flooring if you want to bring luxury and elegance to your home.

Advantages of Bamboo Floors

Homeowners are presented with a lot of options when it comes to the materials that they can use for their home flooring. They can use hardwood, stones, tiles, ceramic and many others, but if they want to have a unique flooring that offers the durability of wood, then they can opt to use bamboo.

Bamboo flooring has a lot of advantages aside from its uniqueness and one of them is that they are a good alternative to hardwood flooring. After they have been processed and manufactured, bamboo will become dense enough to be a durable alternative to hardwood flooring.

Bamboo flooring is also one of the best choices for green flooring. Since it only takes 3-5 years for a bamboo plant to fully mature to be used for flooring (unlike timber which needs 15-20 years before it reaches its maturity), bamboo has a lot of resources so it eliminates the cutting down of trees to promote a green environment.

Bamboo flooring also is good for health as it is naturally repellent to certain insects and bugs and moisture which is bad to a person’s health. It also gives more comfort to the homeowners especially during the hot summer months as it lets the breeze in the house.

As for the pricing, bamboo is also more affordable compared to other flooring materials as it has abundance in supply. The processing and manufacturing also of bamboo flooring is less complicated as compared to other flooring types so it becomes cheaper.

Aside from the unique details that bamboo flooring has, it is also durable, affordable and is a great way to promote a green community.

Wheelchairs Work Well with Tile

When people who have disabilities choose a home, they look for the same things everyone looks for – the right amount of space, bedrooms and bathrooms, a good neighborhood, and a home that makes them happy and comfortable. However, there are certain features that are required to make a home work when your movements are limited or you are confined to a wheelchair.

For wheelchairs, homes need certain basic elements. The doorways and halls have to be wide enough to allow maneuvering. Rooms need to accommodate a wheelchair-wide space between furniture elements. And bathrooms and kitchens require modifications to make them work well from a sitting position.

One flooring material is preferred under these circumstances – tile. The surface is sturdy enough to handle the rough usage a wheelchair can deliver and the level and hard finish makes moving in a wheelchair easy and comfortable. Tile also makes clean-up easy.

Bathrooms first of all need space to handle a wheelchair. Then a threshold-free shower makes bathing easier. Commodes work well when they are higher than standard with safety bars on either side. Finally the sink should be easy to reach from a chair, with space underneath to pull up to the sink.

Kitchens also require thought. A work surface at table height helps with food prep. Sinks set lower or with faucets that have a pull-out spray function can assist during clean-up. Upper cabinets may be part of the kitchen, but the real storage areas when you’re in a wheelchair are under the counter.

With some good thought and design, a home can be beautiful and meet the needs of people with disabilities at the same time.

Take a Chance and Create a Unique Room

Are you ready to be daring with your home design? If you crave adventure and don’t know where to start, don’t limit yourself to traditional sources for inspiration.

This simple photo of an old weather-beaten gate with its rusty lock appears to have absolutely nothing to do with home design. But look again and then look at the bedroom below.

By stretching the limits of thought, you can create a room that is both beautiful and unique. This bedroom is one good example.

The key to the reconstruction is this perfect flooring. With all the beauty of wood, the cool grey, taupe and brown shades perfectly echo the wooden gate, but with a smooth finish that looks like a joy to walk on.

The designer brought in the warm tones found in the metal bolt through the smooth leather of the bed frame. Once again smooth trumps rough, but still the right feeling is there. The leather represents the darker tones with the cherry wood trim showing the lighter rusty highlights. Even the gold of the pillow shams can be found in the highlights of the photo.

The old wood of the gate is reflected in the panels on the back wall. The rough abstract feel of these disconnected pieces recollects the texture demonstrated in the gate photo, but with an accent of sophistication.

There was no need to carry anything from the gate photo into the bedroom literally. Instead, the design is almost a metaphor for the rough gate, made smooth and elegant by the skilled hand of the designer.

Contemporary Flooring Trends

Nowadays, since people are getting busier by the day, the flooring they opt for is the one that looks pretty and requires minimal maintenance. Since flooring is not something you can change in a jiff, putting a lot of thought into it the first time can spare you a lot of time and trouble later on. Contemporary flooring options do well to alleviate many concerns, and at the same time give your home an elegant, modern look.

Statistically speaking, hardwood floors and ceramic tiles are now dominant members of the current flooring trends. Ceramic is a good choice because of the sheer variety it offers, and its durable nature. Numerous textures and millions of possible design combinations make ceramic the favorite of consumers and interior decorators alike. Tile adds a luxurious look to your place, and also gives you an option to design a floor yourself, using mosaic.

The timeless beauty of hardwood floors is impossible to deny, some of the most modern houses have opted for hardwood.  Various manufacturing methods are being used to create completely new patterns and textures, with hardwood flooring.

Next is laminate flooring, which offers many attractive benefits such as easy installation, low maintenance and has extremely high durability. Although some laminate floors come with a lifetime warranty, they are not as good at handling water and moisture, so keep this in mind before deciding which room to install laminate flooring in.

The Right Flooring Choice

Well, this store makes its position clear – if you have to ask, you probably can’t afford the clothes they’re selling.

Do you find yourself feeling this way whenever you look at buying something new for your home? Whether furniture or flooring, we often experience sticker shock when we see costs, particularly if we haven’t shopped for the products recently. However it’s important to think beyond cost when you’re making decisions on products that will be with you long after that new outfit has been sent to a thrift shop.

How long will you be living in your home and walking on that floor? If you dream of wood, can you feel good about spending an additional few hundred a year to get the wood floor you want? What kind of flooring is common in your neighborhood? You want to have flooring comparable to other homes nearby to be competitive for resale. Would laminate be a better choice because of your children or carpet because you live in your socks at home?

Beautiful flooring comes in many price ranges – find the choice that suits your taste, lifestyle and budget and you’ll walk happy for years to come!

Successful Mirror Placement

This mirror is used to allow drivers to see traffic before it’s otherwise visible on mountainous switchbacks. Traffic engineers position these mirrors to take the best advantage of their capabilities.

When you place a mirror in your home, it’s important to think through its placement for both functionality and appearance. Remember that you look at and through a mirror, so the reflection is equally important.

Do you want a mirror to check your appearance? Then make sure it’s positioned in good light at a height that enables you and other family members to see themselves. Often a mirror is set too high, leaving the shorter family members stuck with partial views.

Want a mirror to reflect light? Experiment with various positions to ensure that natural light will reach those dark corners.

Do you hope one or more mirrors will make a space feel larger? In the past, people would cover a wall in mirrors to expand the perception of a space. These days, that look is dated and in many cases it was never particularly attractive. However, adding one large mirror or a few smaller ones close together on a wall will expand the perception of a space. Experiment with mirrors pulled from other parts of the house before investing in lots of mirrors.

Don’t ignore other reflective features in your home. Well-shined wood floors reflect other aspects of a space. Metal accessories have a natural reflection of light or other elements in a room. Turn your eyes to notice the reflections as you plan your spaces. With just a little effort your home will reflect what you want it to.

Make the Most of Your Laundry Room

This laundry room may be small, but the owner has made the most of the space. From the rod over the washing machine and dryer to using the machine tops to fold and sort clothes, the room is made for convenience.

An ironing board is a natural extension of laundry space. If possible, adding a board that drops down from a wall saves space. In this room, the bright window provides nice natural light for ironing. Natural light also keeps you from having to turn a room light on and off with the in-and-out nature of a laundry space.

The approach to the floor is very smart for two reasons. One is using standard bathroom tile that can handle any water incidents due to washing machine flooding. The other reason is the drain in the floor. This protects the rest of your home’s flooring from problems due to laundry flooding.

Built-in cabinets can provide additional storage and may even add to the functional options in your laundry. If you enjoy sewing, setting up your machine in this room gives you a perfect location close to the washer and ironing board. This may also be a good space for a family computer or a homework center. If you decide that the laundry room should have multiple purposes, you may want to consider a laminate wood floor instead of tile. This will give a warm look while still being able to handle the occasional dampness issues within reason.

Take a second look at your laundry room. Can you make it more convenient or even just a more attractive place for washing clothes? A few minutes and a little money and your space may be much more appealing and useful.

Curb Appeal Includes Window Coverings

There’s a lot of talk today about the “curb appeal” of homes. One quick way to ensure that your house gets off to a good start is by coordinating your window coverings with the outside view in mind.

This home has white window casings and trim. This really complements the red brick and sets a colonial tone. Unlined bright patterned curtains at the windows would seriously offset the clean look of this home.

Fortunately, the homeowners understood that and chose simple white shades at the windows. This provides the option of adding curtains that reflect each room’s look without damaging the outside appearance of the home.

If you’re starting to look at your home’s window coverings, you may want to consider options that provide a finished look both inside and outside. Today’s two-inch wood or wood-look blinds come in a rich variety of paint and stain tones. If you choose something that coordinates with your home’s moldings, you can keep the blinds consistent from room to room.

Shutters provide another excellent option for traditional homes. Notice the arch in the middle window of this house? The shade doesn’t address it, leaving the arch looking like an afterthought with the shade line running under it. With custom shutters, the line at the top would capture that arch without hiding it, providing a cleaner look both inside the house and outside.

One final note: the front door has windows that surround it, providing a classic traditional look that is inviting and brings light into the entryway. These windows are lovely, but can limit privacy. The reflective glass helps, and there are other glass options that can reduce visibility while allowing light into the home. Just remember to make every window decision from the inside out and the outside in and you will be happy with your choices.
